The replacement digitiser and display arrived today and were a simple fit, though requiring some patience.

Ready for digitiser install:

Digitiser installed:

And finally enough together for a test:

Screen and digitiser work great :)

Just got to do a few things and get it set up now.

Cool. Nice to see it living once more. Let us know if you decide to do any more mods.

I have ordered the mod you suggested, but now trying to get over the dreaded 'This gamecard cannot be read' error. I only have one game to try so though I have tried another reader, it is still the same, so could be the gamecard or the switch, though it did work before I disassembled the working but smashed one I bought, so a bit weird.

I'm sure I'll fix it.

Never had that (touch wood) on Switch but lots on 3DS. It's always the uSD card that goes on the Switch for me. I think they must be very poor quality, they expected users to insert and remove only a few times over a consoles lifetime not every week for 5 years.

To be fair, the SD card could easily be the cheapo crappo SD cards I'm using, so I'll look at that again with a decent card if I can find one...

As for the card reader, I've found another cheap game to try and verify if it's the card or the reader.

OK, so the SD card reader is working, it was just the card slot is really not very good and the card was in skew whiff. I've now just got to wait for another gamecard to arrive and see if the card has failed or it's something wrong with the Switch.

I am using the reader that came with this switch, because I don't 100% know if they are paired or not, but neither card reader works just now, so I'm hoping it's the cart.

Also interesting and a possible flaw IMHO, if the Switch goes to sleep, then it loses connection to the SD card and you have to power cycle to get the card to be read again...

That's really off.

I don't think that is normal. e.g. I have a MK1 switch (not lite) and I always sleep and try never to power cycle as you have to dig out the RCM jig to use CFW again.

It does strike me as odd, but whenever it goes to sleep it thinks the SD card has been removed and a power cycle via a prompt the Switch puts up brings it back every time. I've disabled sleep mode for now and I'm trying to download Fortnite, and that is going straight onto the SD no problem.

Since it's not something I'd likely resell anyway, I'm not overly bothered.

I do have another game which supposedly should be here today or tomorrow and then I can see if it's a bad cart or Switch issue.

If you google for Switch + SD + Dismount + Standby you find several threads suggesting that the brand of SD card could be the issue. That sort of makes sense if the switch tries to put the SD cards into deep sleep and that doesn't work correctly on some SD cards. Worth trying a different card just to be sure.
