Exxos will like this colour of Switch Lite :)

Post by rubber_jonnie »

I've been trying to pick up a Switch or Switch Lite for a while, not minding if it's spares/repair, but until now they've been a bit expensive, but I got this one:

And it was under £50. Under the grime and stickers, it's actually in extremely good condition, and I don't see any signs of liquid damage around the ports/sticks/buttons etc.

The main problem? No power, and looking into the USB C port it doesn't look good, so I have another on order. More updates when that arrives.

The replacement USB port arrived for the Switch Lite yesterday, so I have moved it to the workbench and started prepping.

Once you get the cover and heat/emi shield off, there are many screws, so I decided I'd need to be able to ID them all, so I used Sharpies to mark them in different colours so I'd know exactly where they needed to go back.

In addition, I used a ton of little pots to uniquely identify all the different modules and areas I was dealing with.

And with the mainboard finally out, I'm set up and ready to get the USB port off and drop a new one on.

The battery was flat as a pancake, so I'm confident it simply wan't charging, and there is visible damage in the port. Fingers crossed it's nothing more serious, and I may check for capacitor shorts around the board while I'm here.

It's mega clean inside and the liquid spill indicators are clear too, in fact no signs of liquid anywhere at all.

Well the port swap went fine, but I'm still not getting charge, so until I can get power to it I'll not be doing much else.

Annoyingly the flap on one of the connectors pinged off too, so I need to get one of them now as well

How far onto the board is the power getting now?
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

I see 5v at a test point on the other side of the USB socket, and that works either way the USB connector is plugged in.

However, looking at the board with my thermal camera, the charging control IC, M92T36 is getting hot, enough to evaporate IPA, and everything else is cold. That IC is the charge control chip, so I have a suspicion it's dead.

They are reasonably cheap so I'll order one and in the meantime check around the old one for shorts. Apparently they are a common failure point.

EDIT - I have IC and a new connector on order. I hate those connectors, so damn fragile.

EDIT 2 - The M92T36 is shorted to GND, which is probably why it's not charging and has no power...
