@rubber_jonnie

This can be a good alternative to tapes or making new tapes

Thanks, I'll take a look at that. That particular site is a goldmine of information, I referred to it quite a lot during the initial fix.

What I'd really like to get my hands on is an SD adapter, there are some I've seen out there, but they seem quite costly. Even some sort of simple floppy adapter would be handy as I could use a Gotek with it.

Ok, so I have been trying to find some sort of HDD solution for the TRS-80 model 1, and I finally found these:

FreHD site

FreHD - designers site

I now have myself the Gerbers for the PCB and they upload fine to JLPCB, so I think I'll be dropping an order very soon, but there does seem to be ab additional board that I can't find anywhere that seems to be the interface from the TRS to the SD adapter.

I guess it's one step at a time!!

Yes the frehd works well and you can print a 3d bracket for a old 5.25 case it also will hold a gotek

Awesome, thanks again for your input sir.

BTW, I have the FreHD board gerbers and will likely order 5, but on this site the image shows some sort of additional interface board:

And it seems to connect the TRS to the FreHD, but there don't seem to be any gerbers for that. Any ideas?

Frehd on a model 1 needs the extra card for buffers and some line placement changes on the 3 and 4 they are not required

I figured it was something like buffers/logic, but is there a design out there for one I could build?

That interface board is a “Quinnterface” which doesn’t seem to be open source. It adds address decode, RAM and interface logic for TRS-80 Model I. There are other boards used for the other TRS-80s.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

Tom @rubber_jonnie
Thanks Tom. Mr Usher has ID'd it a a Quinnterface, and it's not apparently open source, but it at least gives me a starting point.

EDIT: Tom, having looked I see the Quinnterface on the page you linked to, thanks.
