I think it is likely to be the CPU. It has been kicking around my desk for ages. I got some new ones in a tube *somewhere* . Well it has passed the "inserting it by one pin offset and powering it up test". It still works!
I have had it running with a small fan blowing on the thing for the past couple of hours and it seems fine..
