I love this topic. I do think that which games are well or not well known depends on when the ST was popular where you lived.
In my case in the US where I grew up, all the games I was familiar with were the early and some mid-life releases.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the opposite was true of those who came along later in the computer’s lifecycle.
I was completely unaware of many of the later releases and have really enjoyed exploring them now. Games like Vroom, Civilization (on the ST), Wings of Death, or Silkworm are all games I never knew were available for my ST!
Early Games I enjoyed that I don’t hear much about:
Sundog - a Sci-fi RPG / trading sim
Empire - Global conquest strategy game
The Phantasie series - Fantasy RPG with turn-based combat

Re: Must play games
Well you did ask for games people might not know about and once you've got past the usual top list of Turrican 2, Gods, Magic pockets, Robocod etc....AtariCrypt wrote: Sun Jun 21, 2026 12:21 pm All good games by all, but perhaps I should have been clearer in my OP?
Sry, it was a list of games people might not know about or miss without ever playing. Rather than the usual run of the usual commercial titles.
Anyhow, elterwater - Wolfchild, really? Wow![]()

It is a good thread because generally Atari users have never played or heard of many of the games and are potentially missing out on some of the best experiences.

@coonsgm
I like the Phantasie series as well. Another good RPG that seems to fly "under the radar"
is "The Wizard's Crown". Good game on both 8bit and ST.
Another older game that I initially played to death but don't hear much about is "Arctic Fox".

Star Command is also a similar and very good SSI RPG.
