Atari-forum access issues. Is anybody else affected?

Post by rubber_jonnie »

@1024MAK As you mentioned, it would be a good idea to break the Atari-Forum issues I'm seeing out to a separate post to make things clearer and avoid cluttering the other post, here it is.

I was glad to see that Atari-Forum is up, however I am still having issues accessing it without taking additional steps.

My situation is as follows.

I am running a Macbook Pro M5 with MacOS Tahoe 26.5.1 and it's fully up to date.

I have 4 browsers:
  1. Edge - Primary browser
  2. Safari - MacOS standard browser
  3. Chrome
  4. Firefox
All browsers are up to date too.

Currently, using my standard connection, which is BT 1GB/s fibre to the premises, I cannot access www.atari-forum.com using any of the above browsers.

If I connect using Nord VPN to say USA, France, Japan (Those are only what I tested) then I can access www.atari-forum.com with Safari and Firefox, but not Edge or Chrome.

Neither Edge nor Chrome work under any circumstances.

I can use Edge and Chrome on my mobile, but only if connected to the mobile network (Three) If I try to connect using my home Wifi, then I can't access the site.

Looking at a network packet capture it seems that my machine sends a SYN to initiate connection, but the result comes back as destination unreachable.

Looking at a packet capture with the VPN on and in Firefox, it shows a normal connection attempt.

Any thoughts? Happy to help with any diagnosis if I can.

If I connect to my phone's hotspot Firefox and Safari can connect just fine, but not Edge or Chrome

Errors vary from 403 to the site cannot be reached.

DNS appears to be resolving as expected but it either doesn't like my user agent being Chrome or a Chrome variant like Edge or it doesn't like the network I'm coming from. Or both.

BTW I did some limited testing on a Windows machine and the results pretty much match what I see on my Mac, which is my daily driver.

I can't connect to Atari-forum either. So it's not a problem with the browser but with the server.

Well the site is accessible via roundabout methods such as VPN or mobile hotspot, so I suspect that certain IP ranges might be blocked and certain user agents too, otherwise all browsers would fail.

I know it's not affecting everyone, so it really looks like some sort of block is in place on my BT address range and Chrome based user agents.

I'm going to try another browser too, see whats' what.

Opera is a no go either, 'cannot be reached' so I suspect blocked ranges.

I'm going to see what traceroute shows when I am connected normally and through the VPN.

EDIT: As suspected, traceroute fails when I'm connected as normal and works just fine with the VPN on.

Looks like perhaps the range I am on is blocked for sure.

Yeah looks like an ip-range block and/or mobile browser block going on.

Works for me on mobile. Not on Opera or Chrome on PC at home though. Works on Chrome on PC at my summer cottage.

I get error timed out when it's not working.
