Laser cutting printer ?

Post by exxos »

I was thinking about ordering a stencil from Hobby Tronics as its where I used to get them from, but looks like they have closed down :(
November 2021 update: supply chain disruptions and price increases.
Nearly two years of operations under the COVID-19 pandemic are behind us. Like many other businesses around the world, our biggest challenges have moved from direct health and safety concerns to secondary disruptions, most notably the supply chain issues and the global chip shortage that has been making news and shutting down factories since last year. We have been absorbing the costs that have resulted from these challenges in the hope that they were only temporary, but unfortunately that’s something we can no longer sustain. You will probably have noticed that we have already increased our basic postage cost: this is not a decision we took lightly, and we believe the slightly higher price is fair and competitive with the rest of the market. We will also be reviewing all of our prices in line with the increased prices and reduced availability of certain components.

We will always aim to offer affordable products to the hobby market and continue to cater to more specialised applications as well, and would like to thank our customers for supporting us through these uncertain times.
Company Update 29th March 2023:
Due to the changing market over the last 3 years, we are currently downscaling our range of products so we can focus more on our in-house developed product range. So products like our USB Host modules and Leonardo CAN-BUS boards are being maintained but a lot of our external products are being discontinued once stock has been sold.
Certainly never good when a hobbyist website basically shuts down but I can understand why as well :( Frustrating as its another spanner in the works of my daily activities now :( I have emailed them asking if they still offer the service but I just presumed not...

Point being I was buying my stencils from them as I think they was about £20 each on film. Great for small or "one off" use.

But a quick look around I wonder if there is actually a small laser cutter which would do something even like up to A5 which would work for me ?

I wonder if anyone has any experience or knows of any low-cost but reliable things ? Problem is they would have to be rather accurate for the small devices I am using , so I presume it would just be too expensive...

Alternatively does anyone know anywhere which does low cost stencil laser cutting in the UK ?

To cut metal you're going to need a more powerful laser. I have a 30 watt one in my laser cutter and it won't cut metal. It will cut wood and engrave it though.

5 watts would only be good for engraving wood or cutting paper :D
If it ain't broke, test it to Destruction.

I don't want to cut metal though, I only want to do the plastic film ones.. They like 0.1mm thick..

I'm trying to find a service which will do what I want currently...

I'm happy to have a go in future for you but don't have the laser cutter set up right now. I was going to transfer everything over to that CNC thing you had but no room right now.

Didn't even know you had a laser cutter

Going to try and do a 3-D printed stencil... This will be fun....

Probably would be better with a 0.2mm nozzle.. But I really cannot be bothered to change it
