Is anyone else having problems with the latest HDDriver release?
I'm seeing something really odd.
Whenever I run the HDDRiver app, it won't find HDDRIVER.SYS from the file selector.
I've tried everything I know of. I thought it might be a conflict with the LG File Selector
so I disabled it, falling back to the stock one in TOS but that didn't make a difference
either.
I ran the AUTO folder software, then the app - still won't find it.
I've tried it on 2 different machines now and it won't find it on either one.
Really puzzled by this - impossible to upgrade at this point...
Thanks.

DO NOT USE DEVICES WHERE THE IP CHANGES CONSTANTLY!
At this time it is unfortunately not possible to white list users when your IP changes constantly.
You may inadvertently get banned because a previous attack may have used the IP you are now on.
So I suggest people only use fixed IP address devices until I can think of a solution for this problem!

Re: HDDriver problems?
Latest one worked for me. I just upgraded my SCSI and IDE drive.
All I did was what I usually do. Copy new files to floppy.. Clean boot.. Run HDDRIVER.. run the util.. Select my C drive from the top menu and then in file menu install driver.. Think that's the jist of what I always do.
Driver or not it should install a new one..

Re: HDDriver problems?
That's pretty much what I do.
I usually grab the archive and unzip it to a folder on my SD-card.
I have a folder on my C drive called HDDRIVER. In it, I have folders named
after each of the last 5-6 releases or so. For example, this last one would
be HDDR1271. I run the app from within the AUTO folder there, then run
the utility. Locate the old HDDRIVER.SYS file. Have the C partition selected.
Click on Install HDDRIVER. Reboot. Typically, end of story, update complete.
Not today.
I tried it on 3 different existing setups. 1 for my Mega STE, one for me Mega
STe but with the ATW800/2 card setup, and one for my STacy. On all 3, after
the install, I got 2-4 bombs upon rebooting. I also powered all the way down
and left them off for a few minutes - no difference. I had to fall back to the
previous version.
I then did a work around. I booted from the 1271 floppy I made, put a blank
4 gig SD-card in, and created everything from scratch. This worked. I also
used the existing HD geometry from the regular Mega STe SD-card and the
one from my STacy (they are identical 4 gig card setups). I then just copied
the HDDRIVE.SYS file from the newly made SD-card to them and that did
work.
The ATW800/2 setup for my Mega STe is a 2 gig card so I didn't think it would
be a good idea to attempt that with it. I'll just have to wait and see on that
one.
I also would not attempt to upgrade the 4 gig SCSI HD on my Mega ST4 that
runs DarkForce! (my BBS). I mean, if the install screwed that up, it would be
hard to correct it.
Just don't know what's going on with it here - I've never, ever had an issue
with updating HDDriver before...

Re: HDDriver problems?
I have never had to do this. I just do exactly what Exxos said he does. No need to be locating any sys file. I usually then run 'auto configure' so HD Driver doesn't have to detect all my drives on boot each time.Locate the old HDDRIVER.SYS file. Have the C partition selected.
I would say your problems may be alleviated if you actually deleted hddriver.sys from your c:/ entirely then install fresh.
But if you're truly stuck I'd recommend asking on the HD Driver forum.
Re: HDDriver problems?
Was about to say the same..Steve wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2025 8:14 am I would say your problems may be alleviated if you actually deleted hddriver.sys from your c:/ entirely then install fresh.
I do have something at the back of my mind I had to do that before for some reason.
You could alos run EDGE to see I'd there's FAT corruption etc
Re: HDDriver problems?
I had a similar issues upgrading to HDDriver 12.70. Lots of bombs on startup when I first tried it. When I tried later with 12.71 that seemed to have gone away, but after installing it to drive c: (over a previous v11 install) things went awry.
Trying to configure it, it wouldn't accept being given the HDDRIVER.SYS (under the "Locate HDDriver" menu option). It kept saying it couldn't find the file.
A directory listing with the CLI showed TWO HDDRIVER.SYS files. How?!
Anyway, took off and nuked the entire site from orbit. Only way to be sure.
Works now.
I wonder if there's some special thing going on with TOS/DOS compatiblity mode? I dropped down to just TOS only for the reparition.

Re: HDDriver problems?
I'm pretty sure that this is related to the fact that Uwe had to change the root/boot sector (after a very, very long time) to achieve 040+ compatibility. It's a tricky thing to do and most likely he didn't test the upgrade process for all corner cases. If he had asked me...Badwolf wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2025 1:19 pmI wonder if there's some special thing going on with TOS/DOS compatiblity mode? I dropped down to just TOS only for the reparition.
Re: HDDriver problems?
This is exactly the problem I had, fileselector made a few hddriver.sys, but the gem didn't see any, I managed to delete them via teradesk, but e.g. kobold kkcomander, edge didn't see them, I don't understand.. I struggled with it for about two hours.Darklord wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 10:31 pm Is anyone else having problems with the latest HDDriver release?

Re: HDDriver problems?
I had this issue a while ago with my CT63 Falcon. I updated to 12.71, and HDDRIVER.SYS could no longer be found and was gone. I installed it several times, and it didn't display any errors. It wasn't there, though... I deleted the "C" partition (there was nothing on it except NVDI 5.03) and reinstalled everything, and it worked. The update was from version 12.61. The first time I tried to update, I also experienced crashes and had to manually delete the driver. It worked without updating from an older version, except for the problem mentioned above. The error described above only occurred once.

Re: HDDriver problems?
Thanks to everyone for the replies and sharing your experiences.
Since after doing what I did above and having 2 working setups now with v12.71, I'm
just going to take the working (new) 4 gig test card that I made and turn it into my
primary ATW800/2 boot card. I'll just copy everything over from the current 2 gig
card serving that purpose and then use the 2 gig card for other (nefarious) purposes.
That gives me working v12.71 setups on all but my Mega ST that runs my BBS. I'm
actually hesitant to attempt an upgrade on it since it's an actual 4 gig SCSI hard
drive and not an SD card...
Whatever I do, I think in the future, I'll use HDDriver to remove the current HDDriver
before attempting any new version installation and see if that helps with things.
Thanks again.
