Thought I would start a thread as this kinda thing was mentioned the other day. So people can post what dumb things they did. Can be on any topic, doesn't have to be retro!
I will start it off by what dumb thing I did today...
So my printer wasn't printing out red very well and was confirmed by the test page...
Did a cleaning cycle for the colours, no change, did another cleaning cycle for the colours, no change, did another cleaning cycle for the colours, no change, did another cleaning cycle for the colours, no change.. Then realised I had forgotten to print out a new test pattern page :lol: :pullhair: :headbang:
Colours are all good now! :lol:

The nightmare of inkjet printing... I swapped over to colour laser many years ago and never looked back! I also convinced my Dad and Uncle to go for colour laser, they've also never looked back :) I recommend Brother, they're really good and reasonably priced.

Yeah, I have a brother ;) I went with it as it didn't chip the ink cartridges. The best printer I ever had was the canon pixma IP4500. Only problem was, if you let the ink tanks run dry, it killed the heads. So it ended up costing a fortune in print heads in the end as I kept forgetting to check :(Steve wrote: 30 Jun 2025 12:58 The nightmare of inkjet printing... Yeah at first you think inkjet is more economical, but when you take into account all the stuff that happens with blocked print heads and iffy carts, it ends up being a big waste of money.

Inkjets are great for printing photos... And that's it. They're unbeatable for that, other than if you have a dye sublimation printer.
Inkjet ink is the most expensive liquid on the planet and the nozzles seem to be designed to block.
The printers are a loss-leader for the ink, so it's often cheaper to buy a new printer than replace the ink.

Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

I would tend to agree with Stephen Usher.
Having taken on the role of IT manager in a school and finding a few of the inkjets had been abandoned as they were out of ink...lets just say...well, it would of cost less to buy a reasonable 2nd hand car!

Thats great, but with schools, it all has to be 'official'.exxos wrote: 30 Jun 2025 17:05 I bulk bought ink from jettec years ago. I got a lifetime supply pretty much. Got big refillable ink tanks on my printer aswell.
Same sort of nonsense as going into a bakery and asking for a cake. If you then say its for a wedding, they add an extra zero onto the price! :lol:
