This is not a Falcon 030

Post by foft »

My Falcon CT63 just started showing me a dialog box that it is not a Falcon 030. Only on cold boot. It then goes to desktop but hangs if I change resolution.

I didn’t manage to find out anything about the error, is it a known issue? It happens even with the 060 clock at 50% and bus not boosted.

I've seen this before, it's to do with the ct60 control panel software... can't remember what circumstances make it say such a thing though. I personally would just get rid of that control panel and use the Insane 1.05 bios which enables all the control panel functionality inside a bios which is accessed by pressing <del> just like a PC. This omits the requirement of needing that iffy software to begin with. (that control panel has lots of bugs)

Just a warning Insane 1.05 doesn't work with ct60 (very first) due to hardware/fw bug in ct60 (don't remember if it is SV related or not).. ct63 should be fine..

I think the last time I saw this it was related to NVRAM state and/or using the mainboard NVRAM instead of the CT60 flash - and yes, it may involve the CPX since thats where the NVRAM option is set. No idea exactly what was wrong but force-resetting the NVRAM and selecting the CT60 flash made that and some other problems go away.

That includes the 'keyboard error' thing on boot - it cleared that too.

If we are thinking the same issue but then every CT6x is affected. CT60e is fine because it doesn't allow to mount SuperVidel on top of it. ;-) Strictly speaking even 1.03c doesn't solve anything, it works by chance.

@mikro didn't know that, I remember there were some talks about fixing it (on fpga level?) by Nature, but don't remember how it ended with nothing at all..

CT60e is physically incompatible with SV.

Willy did try to get permission to make new SVs that would have fit but he's been quiet for a long time.

alexh: It's probably due fact that he cannot produce CT60e anymore (I think he has lost license for some reason?), so making something for a board, which was produced in limited run and cannot be manufactured probably wouldn't make sense due to costs etc.. I also think fpga used on SV would be difficult / expensive to get(phased out?) then, so he would have to replace it / upgrade it.

Willy posted a little about this on 8 Jan this year on the F030NG discord channel. The SV went on hold due to the silicon crisis a few years ago. The Ct60e license should still be valid he said.
Seems like he also had about 40x CT60e that failed tests that needed rectifying but they went on a shelf. We all struggle with mental health from time to time and Willy mentioned this too, with (too) many projects on the go, its a struggle to complete. Hopefully he's in a better place and Willy if you're reading, if any of us can help, please reach out. 🙏
