Broken Nintendo thing :)

Post by rubber_jonnie »

So, @alexh was giving away a 'Broken Nintendo thing' and I thought that since nobody else had put their hands up, it would be rude not to dive in myself :)

So this is it:

And here with a real SNES for scale:

IMG20250617132554.jpg (230.27 KiB) Viewed 803 times

And it didn't take long to find out why the HDMI port wasn't working:

IMG20250617131234.jpg
IMG20250617131234.jpg (185.53 KiB) Viewed 803 times

And aside from the bent pins, not a single one of the HDMI pins is soldered, and both are easily corrected, so I'll do that when I get a chance. I'll report back on wether or not HDMI works once I've done the repairs.

Does it work you ask?

It certainly does over composite, though the image quality is not great:

So fingers crossed the HDMI will improve matters.

And is it a SNES? It certainly isn't, its one of those NES emulators, basically a desktop version of this:

I do like a quick fault find :)

More to follow.

It isn't, and it looks like the HDMI is a lie too...

I soldered the port up lovely:

IMG20250617142405.jpg

And plugged it in. No display, so I tried my HDMI tester. Nothing. I think it's a placeholder part, but I can't imagine why, other than to draw folks in thinking it has HDMI.

I did check for shorts between pins, all clear, and the pins are definitely soldered to the pads now as they buzz out, but I can't see anything that looks like traces going to the HDMI port.

Plus the box shows this:

No mention at all of HDMI. So basically not entirely what it says it is...

Do the controllers work with it? The one I took apart definitely doesn't work with a PC.

The one that was disassembled partly works, so I need to have a play with it. Joypad isn't playing, but that might be my re-assembly... I'll check it.

Definitely doesn't look like its anything close to USB, they've just used it as a connector.

The other works fine.

I love the fact that it has an 'AV out' sign on the box, like it is some sort of feature.

Imagine how much 'fun' the games would be on this device without it.

Yeah I think the only thing wrong with it must have been the fact the HDMI doesn't work and you had to use AV which the previous owner and myself never tried.

They have had to change the box and the description on the ones sold today. Removal of SNES on packaging and addition of "8bit games"
