So after replacing the original battery I decided to tear it down, recap the motherboard, fix the mouse and look at repainting the case due to some sort of damage.
Firstly out with the old
and in with the new
Motherboard recapped (I'd already recapped the powerboard and supply when I replaced the display awhile back
Now onto the case. The top part and only the top part has some sort of chemical damage which is inside and out? Not sure why it's only on the top case and not the screen assembly or bottom part of the case but given it's inside and out I gather the case was off when it happened.

Re: Atari Stacy4 refurb
Excellent. Love to see these machines brought back to life and made useful again.
The STacy's are my favorite version of the ST line (I do like the Mega STE's also).
What color are you planning on using? Original, or something different? I went
with Krylon Midnight Black on mine, at least until something darker comes along.
Please be sure and post pictures when you get it restored. We love pictures. ;)

Re: Atari Stacy4 refurb
Slow progress as I am taking my time as well as finding it hard to get time to work on it unfortunately.
Have sanded the top with P80 and P240. As you can see whatever damaged it goes deep through the coating.
I'm not too worried about the battery compartment and have only given it a lite sand.

Re: Atari Stacy4 refurb
Hang in there, the end is well worth any effort involved.
I totally understand about time - I've been reassembling
my STacy for what...2 years now?
(And now that I've got an ATW800/2 on the way for my
Mega STe - I'll be even more distracted!)

Re: Atari Stacy4 refurb
So not a lot of progress as work is getting in the way, although a lot of procrastination has been happening
Pretty well decided Rustoleum is the go as far as paint but have been wondering about the colours. I'm thinking Satin Black and leaving the handle etc as they are...
Anyway I did pick up a Dell P2210 with the attachable speaker for it (and the A1200) to replace my dying Viewsonic TV which couldn't handle 15KHz. Result is nice even if the mono is off centre.

Re: Atari Stacy4 refurb
Oh, I know all about the procrastination part... :)
Back when I was deciding what color to repaint my STacy in, I
thought a lot about one of those marbled/with veins look, but
decided I wasn't enough of an artist to pull it off.
So I went for black.
I've got the Dell 27" monitor that does 15khz and I like it a lot.
Now that I've got an ATW800/2 card in my Mega STe, it really
shines. TOS at 1024x768 rez and 256 colors is sharp.

So some procrastination over and a coat of undercoat is done. Hopefully a first top coat before the days out.

Re: Atari Stacy4 refurb
Of course! Similar horror story - first time I put the initial coat on the
back LCD cover on my STacy I had done it on my back porch. It was a
beautiful sunny day. The porch is covered so the sun wasn't an issue.
I put the first coat on and was waiting the 20 minutes for a second
coat and the wind came up. It didn't blow it off or anything but it
looked like dust or some other kind of particulates wound up stuck
to it before it dried.

Re: Atari Stacy4 refurb
So not a great job and I did manage to damage the finish a bit whilst reassembling the Stacy but it's way better than it was.
May have to revisit patches and need to find my double sided tape.
