Atari STbook replacement membrane

Post by Robson »

Hello,

After research and a few failed attempts, I found a manufacturer and the samples arrived. Tested, working, all looking good. So the first part of my mission is finished. I have a working membrane and one STBook keyboard is definitely back in business.

A failing membrane is probably not a common problem with an STBook, but it happened, can happen, and if you own one of these beauties, you might want to consider a spare membrane, just in case. To make a batch, we need at least 10-15 pieces sold at £40 + postage. Considering the other membranes out there and the value of the STBook, I think it is not expensive at all.

I reached my goal (the project, the fun, to have the product in hand) with the 3 working samples, but with a little help, we can have a lifetime supply of these, considering the number of still existing STBooks out there.

Let me know if you want one and I can start a list. I'd not take any money before the batch actually happen - but to happen I need to know the numbers.

The membrane itself is good quality, it feels a bit more rigid than the original but there were no issues installing the sample.

Thanks for reading.

This is awesome work. Well done. I imagine the NRE (including number of your hours invested) must be substantial.

I personally don't need one because I don't have an STBook and I can't see myself ever finding one now. However I would be happy to contribute £40 towards the effort should you get to 9 and need an extra person to get over the line.

Thanks Alex.
I'm collecting interests here and on Atari Forum. I don't know where else STBook users could be ...probably in a basement hiding :D.

I'm positive that this will happen.

I mentioned this over at AF but I'll throw it out here as well.

Love to see this made possible for the STacy's keyboard as well.

Just a thought. :)

PS 2 thumbs up for your work on this.

Good work. I am sure everyone will be very happy with it.

Did you need me to make up the numbers and cover the NRE? I said I was happy to and I am even though it is unlikely I'll ever need one.

Hi Alex,
I have mixed feeling about this. Let me just fulfil the interests first. I've already taken the hit with the tool and the 3 samples made. I'll probably keep it on ebay so people not following the forums can find it. Hopefully those sells cover the overall costs over time. If not, well than I made something good for the STBooks. So I'm good for now, even though the offer is much appreciated.

For everyone: the plan is to have a limited EU stock in Hungary with a friend, therfore within EU that'd be the chaeper option to buy, rather than me sending from the UK (with taxes and hassle).

Please ignore my request for a STacy version of this.

I did find that Best Electronics is still selling those and
apparently has quite a few still in stock. I ordered 2.

Thanks. :)
