Gotek not working with 1040STe

Post by danboid »

I got a Gotek floppy emulator last week. It works fine on both my STFM (as B:) and my A600 (as DF1:) but it doesn't work with my 1040STe.

Might I need to adjust the jumper settings on the Gotek and/or mess with jumpers in my STe to get it working? I presumed the default gotek jumper settings that work with my STFM would also work with the STe so maybe its my STe's external floppy port or the DMA chip thats at fault?

The PSU has been recapped in recent months so that isn't the cause of the issue - I know because I was using this PSU in my STFM (where my gotek worked) but now I've moved it into my STe because that PSU hasn't been recapped but it will be soon.

Once I know my STe external floppy port is working I want to fit a switch so that I can choose which drive is A: and which is B:.

Also, why are the two key subforums on here (IMO), Hardware and Basic Troubleshooting, locked? Thankfully I am still a Atari noob so I can post my stupid questions here and not be off topic but those are usually the forums I feel I should be posting in when I come here yet they have been archived. Do not touch!

The jumpers need to be set as B Drive, but it sounds like you have done that already. I have little STE specific knowledge, the only time I have had a Gotek not recognised at all it was a faulty floppy controller chip. I imagine the DMA chip could cause such problems too.

You probably need the 1772 pullup fix:

And possibly the DMA pullup fix:

Doesn't the drive has to be set as DS0 regardless of it's A or B?

I just checked my external Gotek that I hardly use and the jumper is across S1. As usual when I haven't done something for a long time I forget.

Yes, that's the only jumper required wether it be an STFM or an STE is S0, nothing else is needed.

There is info on jumpers in my guide here: Gotek

Thanks Steve! I suppose trying the 1772 pullup fix might be my best bet. I already have the resistors required.

I should've mentioned in my first post that my internal, regular ST floppy is working fine.

Anything else I should try before I do the pullup fix?

If normal floppies are working fine, then the Gotek should work fine too. Just be sure the only jumper in use is S0 and if you're using a an ff.cfg on the USB stick, check there are not any unusual options configured. I only ever use the default ff.cfg file on mine.

Regarding jumpers, the last time i put a gotek in an STE i set the S0 and M0 jumpers because Google gave me that answer first (example. It worked with those jumpers set so i didn't look any further.

Actually connecting both S0 & M0 jumpers is not a very good idea at all. It will work in most cases, but (among other things) you are shorting two different signals that are not supposed to be shorted.

For ST computers you normally should set S0, and S0 only!
