Given an STe - First time used one.

Post by Yippee »

I was given a rather yellowed Atari Ste 1040 with Atari mono monitor 2 years ago. I went straight from my first computer, a rubber key ZX Spectrum to a IBM PC clone, and until 2 years ago had never used an Atari.

For some years I have a Windows 2000 pc with floppy drive to write floppy images on to my floppy drive interface for the Spectrum, so the first thing I did was install Floimg and write msa and st images to real floppies to use with my Atari. These included 1st Word, GEM Paint and Draw, plus about 10 disks of games that support hi-res mono. However, I am mostly interested in GEM (the Atari games are all very similar to the ones on my my Spectrum) and until recently stuck to using the mono monitor.

Last week I decided to do more and upgraded my machine to 4mb, and a ACSI2STM sdcard hardisk emulator, plus RGB monitor and install programs that I couldn't before with just 1 floppy drive and 1mb RAM. I now have about 12 great games on my SD Card including ones like Sleepwalker that require 2mb at least.

Moving on to applications, I have now installed NVDI 5 and want to add a 1st Word and other applications and print to my HP Envy Wi-Fi printer using my RetroPrinter centronics converter, which I already use with my Spectrum.

The next thing I need to understand is how I set up the applications to use the printer drivers, NVDI provides. Would appreciate any help on this. Thank you, Paul

A lot of us here had Spectrums BITD, although I moved onto an ST after my +2. Had a 48K (still do) before that.

I don't know a lot about printing on the ST tbh, but early WPs might just work with serial printers. Programs released later in the STs life (Signum, Papyrus, Atari Write) 'know' about NVDI and it's drivers and should work out of the box (I think) once the printer is configured with the NVDI CPX/accessory.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will chime in :D

It'll be interesting to see how you get on with the RP interface as buying one has crossed my mind a few times

Exxos, maybe ban @ symbol from usernames?

Paul, as exxos suggests, your username will be 'scraped' by bots looking for email addresses to send spam emails. Hopefully it's not a real email address but if it is, moving to a username that isnt an email address would be better in the long run?

That's a good idea, I will see if I can figure out how to do that later...

Do you know how I change my user name? I have gone into my profile and user name is not editable. I am a novice at using this type of forum and did'nt realise my user name could be something different from my email address when registering.
