Falcon Next Disaster

Post by Glorfindeal »

Ok, this was totally my fault. I was looking at the existing power supply before installing the Exxos power supply. I accidentally shorted the power supply with my hand. Got a small shock. Now the Falcon won’t power up. With the new power supply in, all that powers is the fan. Any suggestions on what I should look for or should I just call a retro computer repair shop?

Thanks,

Have you tried pressing the reset button ? Does that falcon still work with the original PSU ?

I'd check the fuse in the PSU if it has one.

Doesn’t work with old psu. Haven’t tried reset. Is there a fuse on the motherboard itself?

No, but there is often one on the PSU itself.

The falcon just laughed at me when I hit the reset button. The fuse on the psu is good, plus I wouldn’t be getting power to the fan if the fuse was blown. Seems like a call to the shop is imminent.

Have you measured the voltages at the PSU when powered on? Also, it would help if you showed us exactly what was shorted, because it sounds like the PSU is dead to me but without any confirmation of what's actually been shorted it's difficult to know.

I mean it would be really hard to short 5v and 12v on the output side of the PSU with your hand, but I for one have had a fairly large zap from an ST PSU on the mains side.

I'd be very careful about who you send it to for repair, it needs a Falcon specialist, not just any repair shop will be able to fix it, plus the traces are very easy to damage from what I recall.

The old psu was shorted. I installed Exxos’ psu afterwards. On the old one my hand accidentally touched the 110v hot wire and the frame of psu mount. I got a shock from the experience. I turned the computer on and only the fan came on. I then put in the new Exxos psu with the same results. I was hoping it was only the psu that got fried, but not to be.

Do you have an earth connection on the mains plug? If not then you have likely put 110v onto the GND of the Falcon. Current would likely be low, but it might be enough.

Was the Falcon was definitely working before you shorted out the old PSU?

Definitely working before “hand”. The plug does have a third ground prong and it was in use.
