How to install 2024 version of the STE DUAL TOS 1.62 & TOS206

Post by rmachlanski »

Hi,

I have purchased:
ASSEMBLED STE DUAL TOS 1.62/2.06 (NO ROM) (https://www.exxosforum.co.uk/atari/store2/#0139)
and
ATARI STE 1.62 / 2.06 TOS ROM ENGLISH (https://www.exxosforum.co.uk/atari/store2/#0143)

I have searched info linked from the web store, forum and googled, but I cannot find neither guidelines nor even photo how should I install it.
Can someone share a photo or answer two questions:
1. which direction should I place ROM in the socket?
2. which direction should I place ROM board to the STE ROM sockets?

Thanks.

Here is what I have:

Writing the 'correct' way up as you sit normally at the computer. Board all the way to the left in the sockets as per the arrow.

You can also use the notches on the ROM sockets as a guide, matching the dimples on the outline printed on the circuit board.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

Just to clarify question 2 for rmachlanski: Look inside the ROM socket, see there is a tiny arrow? That should like up with the side of the ROM which is slanted & has a dimple.

Thanks for hints. The PCB and chip are located as in the photo:

Next question is: how about jumpers W102 and W104? Should they be also switched as per 1.62 (pins 23/23)/ 2.06 (pins 12/12)?
As per guideline: https://www.exxosforum.co.uk/atari/last ... ETOSSWITCH they should be all 2-3, so just to double check.

I'm not sure. I don't think you need to change them, but I'm not certain as I have the older board.

Turn it on and see if the floppy starts to seek in the first couple of seconds? I don't think it'll cause any damage.

I'm trying to install the STE Dual TOS board but the rows of pins aren't well aligned with the sockets.

What is the recommended way to rectify this?

Can I ask, was this self assembly or ready assembled? If ready assembled you might want to feed this back to @exxos

If self assembled, you should always put the pins in the sockets and wiggle the PCB into position and then solder a pin at each corner and in the middle to make sure they are aligned. Just soldering them to the PCB with nothing to align them.can lead to this situation.

As it goes, you really aren't that far off and gentle pressure from the left (The left as in your image) should be enough to get the pins to move enough so you can push in.

Just be careful as the machined pins can be broken if too much pressure is applie.

No, not self assembly - just received this preassembled from exxos.
Exxos asks buyers to feedback and get support via this forum so that's what I'm doing.

That's fair enough, looks like the pin headers are a little off so that probably needs addressing at the assembly stage. I'll make sure he's aware.
