Hello fellow atarians in 2023.

I'm dan from Manchester although now relocated to Leicester.

I originally got an 520 stfm in 1987 aged 12. Single sided drive as well, upgraded that to DS and a while later saved up for a 1mb upgrade that someone else fitted.
Loved the atari scene, occasionally went to the Beehive meets in Swinton when my much older neighbour was going and loved the whole scene at the time.
Sadly the ST died around 1991 with a bad psu and i moved on to other things and left computers for a couple of years.
BY the time i got back into them in '94/95 it was very much the pc era as you all know.
I dabbled a bit with emulation and then bought another stfm a few years ago but never got round to doing anything with it and it sdly got lost in another house move.
Nostalgia hit me a few weeks ago and decided to go all in on another ST. This time an STE which has now been upped to 4mb, Ultrasatan, netusbee, and as luck would have it my spare 24inch iiyama lcd monitor works perfectly with a VGA cable to the ST.

I think i was a bit naieve back in the day and the ST was really only used for games, i didn't really understand programming and didnt really want to learn.
However, much has changed and am now infrastructure and devops engineer so am going to tinker with some code on the ST.

I've got the Ultrasatan working nice thanks to the PP driver and last night succeeded with netusbee, firstly just with UIP doing uploads and then installed sting and got it online, not that you can do much really. But plenty to learn and explore still with it all.

Working and playing on the ST made me realise this is the computer hobby scene these days and not the faceless boring side of computing where everyone has a smart phone and just complains on social media.

You're so right on all counts. I did a lot of GFA BITD (nothing noteworthy though) but the really cool stuff passed me by. Same as you, I had an early 90s computer pause (it was the early 90s after all :-)) then got back into it with a PC. ST emulation followed shortly after. To give PCs some credit (although they are largely soulless), Half-Life was the first thing I loaded on my PC and it was amazing.

The ST is a terrible time sink (in a good way) as there's so much to do with it - especially when most software is now free :D

Do keep an eye out for any news on any future Cyber Legends event - it probably won't be too far from your area (the last one was in Northampton) as they are a great chance to meet like minded folk and put faces to the forum names ...
