I have a Power Computing PC720B drive but it is not fully working. It could read 3 sectors on each track but when I opened it a 47uF 16V cap fell out of the drive.
There are 2 surface mounted caps that should be replaced: a 47uF 16V capacitor and a 47uF 25V but I can't repair those myself.
I tried my Sony MP-F11W-UO drive from my STE in the drive but that didn't work either.
Does anybody know what would be a suitable drive to replace this?
Are Sony MPF-920 drives reliable in a 720k configuration and usable as drive B?

I've been using them for the best part of 30 years mostly in 720K mode.mlynn wrote: 07 Dec 2023 23:30 Are Sony MPF-920 drives reliable in a 720k configuration and usable as drive B?

That's great. Are the drives from the store configured in 720k mode?exxos wrote: 08 Dec 2023 10:17 I've been using them for the best part of 30 years mostly in 720K mode.
Also if an MPF-920 is used as an external drive, is it still configured as DS0? This drive has a boot switch so that the external drive is bootable.
I wonder if that will work with a MPF-920?

The host sets the density not the drive. You have to change the DS jumper on the PCB for internal/ external use. IIRC they are DS1 which is external on the ST.
