520 ST ROM chips

Post by alexh »

Quick question. Are all 520 ST (shorty, no PSU, no modulator, no floppy) fitted with sockets on the ROM chips? And are they all 6-chip ROMs? I only ask because mine has TOS1.0 and I am thinking about getting TOS1.04 for improved HDD support.

Very rarely they don't have all sockets. But that would be extremely unlucky. But that is the latest rev of the shorty ST.

My 520STM (1988 vintage) is two chips in sockets. It came with TOS 1.02.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

I think it's the very last revision... is it rev K? That allows 2 ROM's for TOS. Agranlund's is like that. It has the solder pads at the bottom where you can change between 2 or 6 chips. Otherwise you're stuck with 6. I personally wrote EmuTOS to 6 roms for my little shorty, nice to have an internal hard disk driver for external ACSI drives and such. But I understand if it's going to be a gaming machine you might want 1.04. But I think most HDD patched games run fine on EmuTOS in my experience.

edit: Here's my shorty getting a picopsu installed: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4617

It has exxos 4mb upgrade, Emutos, RGBtoHDMI and Exxos 16mb booster. Also installed an internal Gotek!

and edit2: Here's me installing the Gotek: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=5174

Here's an overview of my machine:

If it has no modulator doesn't than mean it is a very early model anyway?
