I just bought an SF354 single sided external FDD. How easy is it to turn this into a double sided unit?
Can you simply replace the drive inside with a PC drive?
I don't even know if there is a "fdd" inside as I know one.
Edit : Google is your friend

Re: Turning an SF354 single sided external drive into double sided
It depends upon the unit. Some will have a daughterboard with a Chinon special connector to the floppy drive and some will have a Shugart compatible one. It's pot luck which one you'll get with a long button version. Short button versions are more likely to be Shugart.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.
