Some interesting thoughts on VR

Post by rubber_jonnie »

I just watched this video from Hug Jeffreys: The Apple Vision Pro Problem No One Is Talking About

I thought it was an interesting take on the whole VR concept, and his take on phone usage was also quite thought provoking. I'm not a massive phone user, I use it mostly for SatNav, music, calls and SMS, but I can't imagine getting my usage as low as his, though I expect my usage is lower than many of the smartphone zombies I see out and about.

I guess it's the old thing of 'We did it because we could, but didn't think if we should'.

Interesting.

It sort of reminds me of when I purchased an i-glasses VR HMD around 1997/8.

I spent over 16hrs playing Descent. When I finally took the headset off, it was pitch black and as I wondered around the house, I had to stop myself looking around, checking for enemy robot craft hiding in the room corners!

On a more serious note, theres some research conducted concerning the brain re-programming itself to compensate for game>HMD visual lag.

Probably not a good idea to spend this much time on them.

My general rule of thumb for most things in life; dont do anything to excess and try not to do too little either...the middle way :D

I'm all for that.

Actually Jon, other than the above video reminding nme of what I recounted above, not long after that The Matrix came out and pretty much planted in my mind a close approximation of how it could all end up. :(

I often tell people I'm happy not to be part of the 'Borg collective hive mind'.

I would be far more happy to meet up and talk to real people.

I've got an Oculus Rift S. For pre-Odyssey Elite: Dangerous and "Half-Life: Alyx" it's brilliant but I just don't have the space available to make it safe to use much. It's been in the loft now for probably two years now, after finishing "HL:Alyx" as it's too much of a faff to set it up and clear the hobby room.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

There is a film called 'Surrogates' with Bruce Willis, and people use robotic surrogates to live their lives, so they're at home strapped in while the surrogate goes about their business whilst they 'drive' it.

Of course people become less careful and more frivolous because if the surrogate is damaged, then it can be replaced, so they can go drinking and having wild sex and not care about the repercussions.

It's definitely worth a watch, though I won't spoil how it turns out for you :)

If you can, also have a look at Ideocracy, which IMHO was quite visionary in the way it shows humanity's descent into stupidity.

Yeah, the cost and faff of setup was always a big put off for me. Many tears ago I played a VR game in an arcade in London, I can't remember the name of the game for the life of me, but you sat in a pod and piloted a giant robot and got involved in combat. Graphically it was very basic, with OG Elite style 3d graphics, bit filled and coloured in. It was multiplayer too.

I was amazed at the time, and though things have advanced, I have just never had the urge to follow where it went.

My friend has ordered a PS VR2, and I can't help but wonder if it'll end up like your Oculus once the novelty has worn off. XBox has no VR and I'm OK with that.

I'm a bit more into VR than the average fan. I started with the HTC Vive, then moved to the PiMax 8KX, and I've preordered a Bigscreen Beyond, which I'm very excited about, but don't expect to receive until the end of the year.

I get that VR is a niche market, and that unfortunately it's dominated by standalone devices that don't really have the CPU/GPU power to really perform, but I believe the market will grow over time, and although the new Apple device is absurd in a number of ways, I think it may in the end help push the whole VR/AR field forward, as developers find things to do with it.

I've seen Surrogates. It looks like Ideocracy is on Disney+ so I will see if I can watch that this week at some point.

Thanks for the film pointers. Perhaps here's one for you; Altered Carbon. It's a series though, along very similar lines. I quite liked it.

I still think that the whole VR setup is a clumsy version of what will eventually come... Apparently, there's research into interfacing computers to the optic nerve. I suppose the other senses won't be too many years behind that. There was even a gaming device (a few years ago) which read your brain patterns and had a compatible game where you could cast spells (IIRC) by using your mind.

And then added into the mix, we have AI possibly reaching the so called singularity point.

To quote Agent Smith in The Matrix: "as soon as we started thinking for you, it became our civilization' . Scary food for thought.

I've watched Altered Carbon and enjoyed both series, though quite different, and I did very much enjoy Ready Player One. I'm sure you'll enjoy Ideocracy, something I need to watch again.

As for Agent Smith, well, definitely worrying.
