Battle of the Choplifters!!

Post by rubber_jonnie »

I've run up Choplifter on both my Atari 800XL, and my Apple IIe, there are some visual differences for a start. Note that the Atari has VBXL installed and the Apple has the v2 Analog for VGA out, so both have superior video output when compared to the original machines.

Atari 800XL:

Apple IIe:

The Apple has better colour on screen for sure, however the Atari has smoother scrolling and is a faster with smoother scrolling. If I'm honest, the Apple version has some very visible lag in places the Atari does not.

Which do you prefer visually?

Out of interest, this is Apple over VGA (Left) vs Apple over composite (Right):

Whilst the VGA is much sharper, and the colours less muddy, the artifacting does appear a bit odd for some things that are graphical, but I have to say, when used for text, VGA is the clear winner.

To be fair, I was comparing individual versions, AFAIK the one you posted is Choplifter XE, which I do also have, and is here on the 800XL:

Also, here in the UK artifacting doesn't seem to work so well, at least it never has for me even when present.

And I just found the Atari colour version:

It is more closely aligned to the Apple version, but the colour palette is hideous on my machine. Still a bit faster though.
