1.44 floppy mod Assembly guide?

Post by Darklord »

Hey gang. Quite some time back, I purchased one of Exxos's 1.44 floppy drive mods.

Well, I finally got my Lynx mods done and my desk is clear for the next project. Some
time this winter, when I can't get out as much I'd like to start the (numerous) upgrades
for my STacy. It already has a 1.44 mod from "Ralcool", way BITD. It was fine until a
year or two ago, then it started acting flaky. Right now, it's not showing 1.44 in the
drop down menu. So it's time to get the 1.44 mod ready so when I do open the STacy
up, it'll be ready for installation

The kit I got is not assembled, so I don't need the "how to" to install it in the STacy (yet)
but I need a guide on how to assemble the mod itself. I was sure I had saved a PM from
Chris with that link but I can't find it now.

I tried searching the forum (not sure why +1.44+floppy+mod doesn't work?) and I went to
the store but didn't see a link for anything like that.

So does anyone have the link to that guide? Thanks much. :)

PS Those mods to the Lynx totally change how I use it now!

Have a look on the website

https://exxosforum.co.uk/atari/last/

Though I don't think there ever was a step by step guide. I don't think anyone ever documented building one either , or fitting one to a Stacy

Okay, I'll take a look. I wish someone had documented it. I'm very! low level skill with
electronics and soldering.

It's a kit - so all the stuffs just lying around loose in the bag. I have no idea what goes
where. :)

Thanks.

Okay, I do have v7.0. It's got PAC-man on it. :)

Going by that picture, I think I can attempt to install the components. A couple of questions,
right off the bat... (I'm sure there will be more later!)...

1. Number 1 on the picture - is that the place for the 4th resistor (of the same type)? I can
find the other 3, and the 2 resistor's that are different from these 4.

2 The *'s - I can't tell the orientation from the picture. Does the writing on the component
go towards the top of the picture or the bottom (or does it make any difference)?

3. I don't have the WD1772 chip. Can I order it from your online store?

Thanks!

1. I can see "68R" a.k.a. 68 ohm, near your "1", like the resistor beside it, so to me it's a yes

2. To me, looks like mlcc capacitors, they are not polarized, so no wrong orientation.

3. item #0242 it seems to me

Hope I do not tell bullshit. (edit: especially #2)

Buy a Atari AJAX Floppy Controller. BEST had some or Ebay ...

- WD1772 all models 8Mhz DD FDC Chip (Not suitable for 16Mhz continuous for operation)
- AJAX all models 8Mhz (DD), 16Mhz (HD) and 32Mhz (ED)

Indeed what @sporniket says.

You can normally use your original WD1772. While they generally do not run 16MHz constantly, They are fine for general use in the board. Nobody really uses the floppy drive 24/7 in HD mode all day do they :)

Okay, couple of quick questions:

The board is marked "10k" in places, but I found this: "2020 RUN - 10K resistors now supplied as 1K."

So I'm assuming that the four 1k resistors supplied with the kit is what is actually needed?

Now...about those header strips. Which side goes against the PCB board? (remember, total newb
here so try not to laugh too hard).

Thanks.

The thicker ends of the pins go into the PCB.

The 1K /10K are probably just generic pull-up resistors. So it really does not matter the value really.
