Silly question

Post by Dan1975 »

Apologies for the silly question, but should (what I think is) a DD floppy drive be able to read a HD floppy disk?

nope, as far as I know. Also I guess, if you think logically, if that were the case then magazines (Like ST format) would have saved money by distributing all their cover disks as HD format to save using multiple DD disks.

In short, no, however it will work the other way around, in that HD drives can read DD disks as they have a media detect switch.

Yeah that's likely, you can put a HD floppy drive in an STe and it'll work (for reading DD disks) putting it back in a HD capable machine will let it read HD disks again.
