Hi all
Im after opinions on something. Apologies if this is obvious to you all, but in all my searching online I can't seem to get a clear answer:
I was going to fit the 16mhz accelerator to my 4mb stfm and upgrade TOS to 1.04. However I now see that the accelerator has a 2.06 decoder onboard and so I could actually go with the 1.04/2.06 switchable roms.
Question is - is TOS 2.06 on an stfm of much further use than 1.04 in real terms? Does the additional incompatibility that it introduces mean that for the most part people stick with 1.04?
To TOS 2.06, or not to TOS 2.06 - that is the question

Re: To TOS 2.06, or not to TOS 2.06 - that is the question
This really depends on what accelerator because you need TOS206 for a 68030 CPU. If its a 68000 accelerator then you can use either 104 or 206. But generally people go with 206 these days because it is just a lot more user-friendly than TOS 104.
However if you are just playing games from original images then you will probably be stuck with TOS104 anyway as they likely will not run a later version of TOS like 206. A lot of the games have been adapted for TOS206 and running from hard drive.
So it really depends what you want to do...

Thanks - so it's just the 68000 based one you sell in your store. I do also have an ultrasatan that I haven't setup yet (winter project), but wasn't clear that 2.06 was in any way necessary to run that.
And yes certainly a lot of what I'll run will be games images, maybe an assembler occasionally if the desire takes me.
Sounds like the easiest way will be to take the switchable 104/206 Rom and just put a switch on machine like I have for the 4mb upgrade to easily switch to 1mb for compatibility

Yep. DUALTOS 104 /206 allows you to experiment with both versions with whatever software you are using. Compatibility wise I would suggest just starting with TOS104 If games is all you are likely going to be doing.PeteW wrote: 06 Oct 2022 21:16 Sounds like the easiest way will be to take the switchable 104/206 Rom and just put a switch on machine like I have for the 4mb upgrade to easily switch to 1mb for compatibility
The 16MHz 68000 boosters do not care if your running 104 or 206. It's not until you get to a 030 CPU your "stuck" with TOS206.

Yeah or the third option, running EmuTOS. Which is very compatible with hard disk installed games.

I personally highly recommend going with the switchable TOS v1.4/2.06.
You're gonna have the best of both worlds, covering compatibility and
honestly, just about everyone I know never wants to go back once they
start playing with TOS v2.06. It really is a big step up. :)
