[Video] STE CPU adapter: having a go at building my own

Post by Badwolf »

Good weekend-eve, all.

Hope to see a few of you down at Hythe tomorrow.

In the meantime, having relied heavily on my trusty Exxos PLCC to DIP64 STE CPU adapter during my ST accelerator development work, I thought I'd have a go at building my own. Mostly to see if I can.

Here's how that panned out:

I should have a few of these boards available at Cyberlegends if anyone's interested. Limited utility in and of themselves, but may be of interest for some tinkerers. Come and have chat with me if you fancy one.

BW

PS, in light of the ST(E)536 discussions, there's a good example of the clearance issues you have to deal with in the STE at 25:30.

Many thanks & appreciate you building the first one like these I'd ever seen!

My board have a soldered CPU, so first I have to remake a motherboard. But then, I can just add a DIP64 footprint directly on said motherboard...

Was toying with the idea of an ST536 adapter where you'd actually solder the pins to the to the *top* of the 536 and mount it inverted, but we're getting silly. :P

That's really great work, another method is using a ribbon cable to extend the CPU distance. So using that plcc to dip adapter and then one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333301477068 you could make a stack somewhere. Perhaps if you were using a Gotek or some floppy emulator that didn't take up such an amount of space as a regular floppy drive. Oh and you can shave a few mm under the keyboard area by desoldering the keyboard controller chip socket and soldering the chip directly into the keyboard.

I have ordered one of those to look at, but it's still in transit. Mounting an expansion *behind* the SIMMs was an idea I had, but noise might kill you.

I had one of these and had stability issues on the Atari.
