OPD - Long overdue service and keyboard fix

Post by rubber_jonnie »

So. I thought whilst there isn't a lot on the bench, it was time to pull the One Per Desk out and have a look at the keyboard issues.

I'm lucky enough to have the colour version, many were monochrome:

It would seem that fate decided that my plans for the afternoon would be 'adjusted' as about 2-3 minutes into my checks there was a pop, a fzzt and out came the magic smoke!!

Since the machine continued to run, it's got to be RIFAs or some equivalent, so I'm not too worried, well other than the stench of scorched capacitor in my office/workshop. Fingers crossed it'll be diminished by the time I start working in the morning.

The PSU is actually part of the VDU, so for now it's unplugged to allow the CRT to discharge before I start poking around inside. Fingers crossed I have some spares in my now somewhat expansive spare capacitor collection!

That’s a Microvitec CUB!
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

I hadn't noticed the similarity before, but certainly looks close. There may be some definitive manufacturers markings inside.

I'll post some more pics once I get round to pulling the back off so I can replace the smoke generators. My office smells of burned paper and electrical arcing right now.

Yeah, not much of a difference except maybe the colour

I'm guessing the main video display is the same, but the standard Cub doesn't have the PSU integrated for the OPD.

Definitely on the look out for manufacturers details when I open it up now.

Hmm, looking at the pinout, I'm wondering If I could rig up some sort of adapter to allow it to be used just as an RGB Microvitec Cub.

You should get the French "Minitel" if you don't have one already, though it will be useless now.

Some models were really cool.
