Apache2 compression tests

Post by exxos »

Thought I would test compression with apache on my STF page https://exxosforum.co.uk/atari/STF/index.htm

Compression level 9
Uncompressed Page Size: 132 KB
Compressed Page Size: 25.4 KB
Savings: 80.7%

Compression level 8
Uncompressed Page Size: 132 KB
Compressed Page Size: 25.5 KB
Savings: 80.7%

Compression level 7
Uncompressed Page Size: 132 KB
Compressed Page Size: 25.6 KB
Savings: 80.6%

Compression level 6
Uncompressed Page Size: 132 KB
Compressed Page Size: 25.6 KB
Savings: 80.6%

Compression level 5
Uncompressed Page Size: 132 KB
Compressed Page Size: 26.2 KB
Savings: 80.2%

Compression level 4
Uncompressed Page Size: 132 KB
Compressed Page Size: 27 KB
Savings: 79.6%

Compression level 3
Uncompressed Page Size: 132 KB
Compressed Page Size: 28.2 KB
Savings: 78.6%

Compression level 2
Uncompressed Page Size: 132 KB
Compressed Page Size: 28.8 KB
Savings: 78.1%

Compression level 1
Uncompressed Page Size: 132 KB
Compressed Page Size: 30.2 KB
Savings: 77.1%

So really just the level 1 compression is worthwhile. But higher CPU usage for better compression probably isn't worth it.

Then I tested the forum :

Compression level 9
Uncompressed Page Size: 91.3 KB
Compressed Page Size: 11.4 KB
Savings: 87.5%

(pointless tests 2-8)

Compression level 1
Uncompressed Page Size: 91.3 KB
Compressed Page Size: 11.4 KB
Savings: 87.5%

So compressing the forum index is pointless it seems. Which is odd really as it must have piles of scripts and such.
