Fans running all the time? Have pets? Better check your cooling system!

Post by rubber_jonnie »

I have a work laptop, but for some time now the fan has been running constantly all day when I'm working, and the top deck gets bloody hot.

I know I shouldn't dismantle work gear, but I'm pretty qualified to do so, and with the weather warming up, I couldn't hold off any longer.

Here's what I found:

Left fan:

Right fan:

Left radiator, blocked by fur and dust:

Right radiator, blocked by fur and dust:

And last but by no means least, the content of one of the fans (Both were very similar):

This is a 2 1/2 year old machine and we have both a cat and a dog. Notably the fur pretty much all appeared to be feline!!

So, beware if you have cats and laptops, this fate may befall you!!

I suspect I'll not have this problem with the Macbook Pro, since the thermals are so effective, the fans almost never run :)

On girlfriends old PC even 5mm gapped cooler fins got gunned up after like just 2 months. In the end I hacksawed a huge square out of the side if the case and put a car air filter on it! Will have to try and find that pic.

This laptop actually has filters on the air intakes, but the damn fur still gets in!!

Cat fur is one of the most invasive things I know of!
