Help with capacitor type

Post by Steve »

Hi guys,

I got a VOFA adaptor from Frank but it requires a type of capacitor that is written as: VS 100N XR7 R2,5

Frank says it is a blocking capacitor 100nf 2.5 grid. I'm not 100% sure what this is, could someone help me find an equivalent on mouser? Thanks,

It usually says X7R for the temperature classification. 2,54mm (0,1") lead spacing between the legs (or 2,5mm if it actually is that). ceramic. 100nF (or 0,1uF it's the same).

So this is basically just a 'bog-standard' 100nf ceramic cap? :)

Yeah. As I read it at least. I don't know what VS is though. Is it beside a chip?

Yeah they're besides 74F245 chips.

It is probably a decoupling (or bypass) capacitor then as it is called in the electrical industry. Should be very close to VCC pin of a chip (and other leg to GND). Depending on the distance from chip and how many VCC pin it has, more and different value may apply. You can read a LOT of decoupling capacitors on the web if you want to.

If it is that then 'blocking' probably means blocking high frequencies noise on the VCC lines.

VS 100N XR7 R2,5 is just the order number at one specific German electronics shop (Kessler Electronic). As others have written before me, it's indeed a standard 100 nF ceramic capacitor with 2.5 mm pin spacing.
