RAM chips randomly failing

Post by olivier.jan »

Hi,
I have a strange behaviour with some RAM ICs from a 1040STF motherboard, some chips fails randomly.
I add memory issue on this motherboard and unsoldered all the chips over the Week-end in order to test them 1 by 1.
I've been testing all the chips since yesterday using a quick setup with an Arduino and I have at least 4 defective chips which gives me errors each time.
22 other chips seem to be good, showing no issue after multiple tests but the last 8 are a bit strange, working sometime during multiple pass of the tests and sometime failing multiple times in a row. Is this common or chip failure should be more clear ?

I would just suggest using a STFM to test chips etc everything is known to work.. I can't comment on other ram testers.. But chips in a stfm only really fail if the PSU is bad, or chips are faulty , or bad soldering etc

Or they're manufactured by MT.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.
