What is Hot Snot?

Post by Icky »

I thought I would preempt a question as I was using the phrase in one of my earlier posts today.

Well Hot Snot on the forum is referring to heatgun glue used on PCB boards to stick bodge wires down or boards to other boards. You can also sometimes see it on old motherboards where manufacturers have used it to anchor fixes down.

Here are a few examples I have lifted from the forum the second one is an Atari fix of a hot snot anchor on the blue and red cables:

Yup, I've had a few STs with factory bodges that use hot snot.
I used quite a lot to fix the VBXE video connectors in my XE and XL so if it came to it, I would be able to revert the changes.

Hot snot is horrible stuff. Can’t be budged when you need it gone, falls off all by itself when attempting to use it. And the endless string that comes off the gun is worse than having a crowd of hopeful spiders in your workspace. I stick with kapton tape

You can remove it by soaking it with IPA (isopropanol).

I remove any by heating gently until pliable, then it comes off like Blu Tac.
