TF536 Rev2 Gets Hot

Post by PaulJ_2.0 »

I've put together 15 rev2 boards now and they all get to the point where the CPLD is hot to touch, whereas the rev1 board I have stays quite cool.

Is there a reason the rev2 runs significantly hotter?

Try the same rev2 firmware in the rev1 .. it will get hot. There is a pin floating but i cant figure out which one and disabling floating breaks it for alenppc.

Just buy some raspberry pi heat sinks 14mm or 15mm square, they work great on the TF360 CPLDS to dissipate the heat

Rev 1 and rev2 are the same apart from bus buffers, 3 pull ups and 2 pins swapped. I can give out a version that has keeper set that probably will run cold. But none of mine are too hot to touch.

@PaulJ_2.0 try out all of these and see if any of them work and stay cold.

You're the first person to mention that heat is an issue with the TF536. The keeper ones will be colder but may not work.

Ok I have tested the keeper ones and 7 is the best performing of the three (5 refuses to boot), but the CPLD is still quite warm.
6 got too hot and crashed after 15 mins stress
7 is still going fine after 20 mins stress.

100% not shorted. The CPLD isn't getting any hotter and is still going fine stressed after 40 mins, so it seems like a win.

I expected 7 to be the best but the phase shouldnt cause a temp difference.. that *IS* weird.
