Neil's A500++ build

Post by neilo40 »

Thought I'd give myself something else to do during quarantine. I've only bought the easy bits so far (and a donor 500+) so if anyone has built one of these and has some tips, gotchas, or any recommendations for some of the harder to find bits (power socket, DB23, memory etc) please let me know.

I have an A1k 500+ to build. A red one. But the parts they sent arent even labelled with the values. So i need to reorder the BOM and toss this lot in the bin.

Finally complete :D

Some notes / questions / thoughts. My main aim was to use as little from the donor as possible:
  • Most of the electrolytics are lying down to give clearance for boards etc
  • The battery is a NiMH from amigakit - are they any good or are they as likely to leak as the Varta? Should I replace with a coin cell?
  • The video hybrid is a vidiot - Rob Taylor sells them but I stupidly didn't get one at the same time as the main board so paid twice for shipping
  • The DB23 and power sockets are from icomp.de
  • I'll probably replace the Halo choke with a Laird as soon as they're back in stock
  • Memory, <sigh> Ordered 16 chips from Utsource hoping at least 8 would be good. Every single one was bad . I ended up desoldering and re-using the chips from my donor
Here's the board during its first successful run through diagrom:

And here it is with a TF536 in all its glory.

Anyway, it was relatively straightforward and good fun. I highly recommend giving it a go.

I have an A1K 500+ but they sent me the parts unlabelled.

Do you have a mouser BOM for that? I think i'm gonna bin the parts they sent and reorder.

Uh what? You mean like a bunch of surface mount Rs and Cs with no way to know their value? That's ridiculous!

This is the community BOM for the A500++: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13xq2P7Ha_PA6r3vfPw77Q9PaSZYWncYfNpqhrwdvhaY

I've attached my mouser project in case it's any use. Should cover most of the parts. Most of them have board labels in the customer number field where I could fit it.

Thanks ... there are still a lot of unknown values..

I think this is my issue with the A500++/Ak500...

e.g.

660-MF1/4CCT52R1002F MF1/4CCT52R1002F KOA Speer Metal Film Resistors - Through Hole 10K 1% 50PPM

There are 11 of these but i have no idea where they go.
