Amiga repairs/service in West Midlands UK

Post by Steve »

Hi all,

Just informing any visitors that I am available for Amiga services in West Midlands UK. My speciality so far seems to be battery damaged a500+ models, but I can troubleshoot any model. I can also offer recapping services, and PSU servicing, PM me if interested.

Thanks,

Hi,

I’ve just tried my Amiga after a long time without use. It worked initially but now I have the green screen issue. I don’t want to wreck it, so would be interested in getting it repaired....

Regards

Matt

Hi Matt, usually a green screen is caused by a badly seated Agnus chip. I would recommend you firstly open up your Amiga and re-seat all socketed chips, just pull them out and put them in again. This will likely fix it for you, if not let me know :)

Hey are you close to Leamington spa? I am currently working on my first ever Amiga (a500+ battery damage repair) and would be good to find local people that know a bit more about it. I'm taking on the repair myself and learning lots. Good luck with your repairs.

Ah I wasnt after a repair just general chit chat with local Amiga people 😅

it's okay don't suppose you know much about U12 chip on A500+ just trying to figure out if there should be continuity between pin 19 and pin 1 as PCB explorer shows this but selecting pin 1 I didn't notice it so doesn't seem bi directional.

Traces are definitely bi-directional. I always recommend you remove & socket U12 since it's so close to the battery, then you can check all the traces and vias, making sure there's nothing corroding under the chip.

Perhaps take a look at a blog-thread of me repairing an a500+ with battery damage: https://exxosforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopi ... =18&t=4698

Wow thankyou,I did read that post the other day. The plan was to remove the chips and fit some sockets but wasn't too sure if I should test the traces first. I think I'm just going to go ahead and remove the chip. I guess I need to check the vias first before fitting the socket?

Either way underneath the U12 there are many traces, the only way to be sure they're OK is by removing the chip. Also battery leakage gets into the solder on the legs of the chip, going into the vias - even if they look OK right now, it slowly eats away at the solder turning it to crud ... electrically this means the solder starts to get resistive, eventually losing all connection. So there's almost no question about it, a proper & thorough a500+ battery leakage repair should always include this step.
