An Atari ST HDMI All Resolution Solution??

Post by bfollowell »

Andrew Armstrong had posted on Facebook several weeks ago about a new product he had coming out that would allow us to use our Atari STs with a modern HDMI monitor or TV in all its glory with all three resolutions.

I've ordered mine.

£107.15 to the states, or about $135-$140 USD. A few pounds less in the U.K.

Check out his video here:

He still has kits for the STE available. ST/STF/STFM/Mega kits are sold out, so you'll have to pre-order and wait for him to make more, but you can order or pre-order here:

Thanks for the link. Kinda looks like he is re-using some "off the shelf" converter though ?

Smonson on here did a HDMI board a 2+ years ago, but it goes further and replaces the shifter as well. https://www.exxosforum.co.uk/forum/viewt ... f=29&t=330

I have a similar adaptor / convertor for my MiST to output from VGA to HDMI. They are like £5 on Ebay.

Possibly those adaptors coupled with an UBE Video Adaptor would pretty much give you the same results.

This is the only true HDMI/DVI solution I have seen or used so far on an ST and paves the way to expansion of the shifter in the future.

Judging by that packaging I think your right.

Anyhow is this thing going ST then to VGA then to HDMI?

If using a box like this why not just skip the VGA plug bit and go straight from the ST to the convertor ?

Probably easier to go RGB > VGA plug to fit a off the shelf converter than hacking cables about. Though would still need a mono/RGB switch somewhere even if it was just a RGB cable to the box.

Yes, that's impression I got as well. He needed to tie-in a switch somewhere at some point, and we've already had these RGB > VGA plugs with switches for a while now, so why reinvent the wheel.

I'm really anxious to receive mine.

I've not done a lot of videos, but I know a lot of people are interested in hooking up to modern TVs and monitors and not wanting to be limited to 15kHz compatibles, so maybe I'll do an unboxing video and a full review when mine comes in.

I don't get the price tag though..

As said earlier https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VGA-To-HDMI- ... Swuzlc-ld2

You can get the same thing for £5 inc postage and people been using them for years already. So £100 for ST-VGA & USB cart power adapter ? Or am I missing something ?

It's worth checking out the GBS8200 or 8220 which are RGB to VGA. Primarily aimed at Arcade machines needing a new monitor But so far mine works fine on any vga monitor I've tried, not just 15khz capable ones.

Machines tried so far are ZX Spectrum +2 , +3, Amiga 500, Atari ST(using exxos adaptor in series) BBC Master and I suspect anything else that uses RGB to Scart.

Works out much cheaper than the £100 price tag I have to say. Will post some pics on my blog thread on a bit. The GBS can he had for around £12-£15 on ebay or Aliexpress.
If it ain't broke, test it to Destruction.

Yes, you're definitely missing something, because it's more than just a simple ST-VGA. That box is doing a lot more than that. One, it's HDMI out, not VGA. Second it'll work with any modern HDMI TV or monitor, not just the 15kHz compatible models. I'm not aware of anyone having ever offered anything before that would display all three ST resolutions on any modern display without the 15kHz handicap.

Yes, but then you can't connect to a modern display without some other adapter to go from VGA to HDMI or whatever. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't the GBS8200 only work for the color modes, not for high res?
