Recording Audio from the Atari STFM's sound chip.

Post by Cosmic Puppet »

I'm wondering if it's possible to have a stereo out from the Atari STFM without using the ROM port? I want to compose with the chip using maxYMiser.

YM chip has 3 channels in fact. So you have chose a channel and split the track and run it to its own audio amp.

If you're going to use it in a modern composition, you might as well record each of the three channels onto its own audio track. Then you are free to mix it as you like.

It is possible, I bought one of these new, arguably where stereo mods really get their inspiration from: http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/det/ ... ety-Board/

Currently I simply use my monitor cable which has a 3.5mm out. There are various options with this route, Google search: https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C5CH ... CAs&uact=5

I think this will be my favourite option as I prefer plugins like the Ultrasatan that don't require any modification. Would it be possible to have this with a stereo output?

Also, what do you plug in to? I would no doubt need some sort of extension. Having said that I'm going to ring up Cool Lovelties tomorrow and ask them if they can make one.

That would definitely be the best sounding. :)

The former would be stereo, the latter mono, but I connect to a Mackie 1604VLZ4 mixer amongst other computers and instruments, and split the sound signal if I need to from the VGA cable using a 3.5mm to 'stereo' unbalanced cable, or not using an unbalanced XLR to save on inputs and channels on my mixer. Stereo from the YM is not a biggie for me, as I can split the mono signal via my mixer and add outboard effects. That said I mainly use my Falcon for that sort of stuff, but still it works pretty well. I actually haven't opened my Tweety Board, I am still intrigued by how well it would sound myself, by all accounts, it's supposed to be a simple but effective mod.
