So my beloved logic analyser with the network card died yesterday.

That's annoying. How easy are those particular DS units to find? Some of the older ones are still available but the newer ones discontinued (a problem for those trying to keep Sun Ultra workstations running, but older SPARCstations are just fine as the 42T02 is still in manufacture).
Given how often these units run out of battery I'd put a socket in it. (But generally I always do if I'm desoldering a chip.)

I’m not a fan of sockets. They’re v unreliable but in this case it’s warranted. Usually I just solder a new one in.

Those Dallas battery packs are horrible, they were used in the old cheap PC motherboards also. I am surprised they cheaped out on something like that. Your logic analyzer is running on 68030? Amazing.

Oddly the voltage is still about 3.0V but the current date/time was lost

A terrible fire, of course.
A kludge is a workaround or quick-and-dirty solution that is clumsy, inelegant, inefficient, difficult to extend and hard to maintain.
