I stumbled on this earlier today and wondered if this could be a possible alternative for large amounts of inexpensive RAM without having to mess with implementing DRAM/SDRAM controllers?

Well, I can.
These chips are only 24-ball and would be quite easy to fit with balls by hand using only tweezers and hot-air.
Also many PCB houses will fit BGA parts at the time of manufacture for a small fee, even a single component is usually OK with them. An open source FPGA based direct-sampling HF transceiver project I participated in had Elecrow do this in lots of 100 and the cost was very reasonable.
In any event, I'm not necessarily suggesting it as a solution I just thought the concept of HyperRAM sounded pretty neat.

Looks more complex than SDRAM.. from a brief reading of it. Requires differential clocks,
