It's one of the ingredients of Retr0Bright. TAED or Tetraacetylethylenediamine is the chemical name for a whitening agent. Household products with TAED include "Vanish Whitening OxyAction".

I only have it around to make into Retr0Bright but thought I'd give it a go one time to remove the stain of parcel tape and it worked well.

Ahh, ok then I would have encountered it when I first tried making retrobrite gel. It failed badly so now I just use a peroxide bath, it's gentler and while it takes longer I'd rather do it carefully and check results regularly.

I'll probably leave the 800 for now as it's not too bad, but come the summer the 1050 case will probably go in along with my other Amiga Tank Mouse that looks like a smokers lungs!!! The 400 looks much the same as the mouse, so I'll definitely be giving that a bath.

OK, so I opened up a spare drive and checked the connectors, and yep, they had been incorrectly assembled when I took a reference image, so swapping round one of the plugs (One of these plugs is not like the others!) and the drive seems to be working :)

On an annoying side note, my repaired drive I used as a reference no longer works....

And my 600XL boots to a black screen. Star Raiders works, so it seemingly has another RAM issue.

Sighs...

Well, the 600XL is working again, I pulled the RAM (It's a 64KB upgraded machine) spritzed the sockets with Electrolube and it's back up and running again :)

Still have a dead 1050, but not the one that came with the 800. Was working, now not. Very odd, but it was a basket case to begin with, and this is the one that the original FDC broke in half on. I'll give it some TLC as it could just be bad connections like the 600XL.

1050 also fixed now, the same way as the 600XL. Socketed chips out, scoosh of Electrrolube to the sockets and we're off to the races :)

It's a bit odd, my Apple IIe stopped working the other day and I gave everything socketed a reseat and that worked too.

That's 3 recent devices that have required reseats of ICs. I remember talk of chip creep when I was younger, and wonder if this was it.

While it would be understandable for the Apple which is powered off and on regularly, the 1050 and 600 have both been idle recently, so no thermal cycling as such to cause chip creep.

Unless just the temperature changes in the room are responsible?

Of course it's also possible it's just the contacts tarnishing over time and a reseat cleans them.

Tuesday morning musings...
