I still really struggle with "who" "Atari" is these days. I mean if I went back in time and purchased the Atari name and logo and gaming rights etc, would then that make me "Atari" ?

At least from what I can tell, they are trying to bring meaning back to the brand which is of course welcome. Such a iconic brand indeed should not be left to rot and be forgotten about. So kudos for that.

I was never really fond of the flashback consoles or anything. But as I said earlier, I think the 2600+ is a good move if it can play originals and new titles. I am somewhat tempted to buy one myself. I do have a 2600 with scart mod, but sadly never have time to play the thing

IMHO part of the heritage of retro computing is collecting the old games. I think people of recent years need to recover the aspect of buying a game and owning it indefinitely! Hopefully Atari will push this point to the younger audiences at some point.

That almost happened actually. Of sorts, the Falcon motherboard was recreated, the sticking point was of course buying parts from best electronics / wiztronics. It has been mentioned a few times in the past but basically myself and the couple others offer about £12k to buy parts, they turned us down!! And that is all you need to know about buying Atari stuff!

I don't really class the Falcon as a great machine TBH. It has a lot of cool stuff of course. But as I have said many times in the past, I want to take the remake project to higher speeds which will beats the Falcon on raw CPU power. This opens the door for higher resolutions and such anyway.

For me personally, it is better having a "ST" is backwards compatible with all the existing games and software. Just because the original Atari went in the direction of the Falcon, not mean we have to follow.

I think they would basically just reinvent the MiST and call it a "mini ST" or something. Or run a emulator on PC hardware kinda thing.

I don't see them being interested in original types hardware at all. If there was any money in it, I would be a millionaire by now

I wouldn't take that comment too literally. It might be not much more than a friendly response to the ST community. Obviously it wouldn't have been nice to reply, no we are not interested in the ST computers at all.

Valid point. They also mention acquiring some ST titles later on. So there is "something" to it.

Myself, basing it on the TT, with it's full 32 bit architecture and then adding Falcon graphics modes and DSP would be a whole lot better. Double the data bandwidth for a start without even changing the clock.

Not sure about recreating the VME bus, putting a PCI bridge in there might be a good idea.

ST compatibility will always be problematic due to games writers assuming a 68000 (and often undocumented entry addresses into the ROMs in early titles).

Lol I think that shows the problem with this company that is pretending to be Atari. I don't know anyone who thinks Atari ceased to exist when Bushnell left the company... he was gone before Atari made anything substantial. He wasn't even there when Asteroids, Battlezone, Centipede, etc were made. This company seems so confused about what Atari was all about, all they can think of is Nolan Bushnell and woodgrain 2600s.

If they ever start seriously talking about the ST, I'll reconsider my position... but currently they behave like they don't even know what products Atari made. That 2600+ thing they announced feels like an insult... it should have been designed and marketed as a modernized 7800 not a mini woodgrain 2600 that can amazingly also play 7800 games as if the original 7800 didn't do that almost 40 years ago. They also hilariously call the DB9 joystick ports serial ports on their site.
