The .img files 512k are obviously not floppy images.
Im guessing they are actually rom images ...tailored for specific languages ?
now I'm wondering ..if these _are_ rom images why they aren't .bin extensions ..and what sorcery is needed to write them to a chip ?
and if this is true ? dont they need to be split Hi Lo..
guess I'm back to reading and learning (hopefully)
Yes, whilst I believe there is a bootable floppy for EMUTOS you are likely looking at the ROM image files. You likely can't change the 1.62/2.06 without re-writing the ROM you have, and if it's a one time programmable ROM then you can't rewrite it.

If you look here: Getting Emutos then you'll see what the files are called. My copy of 2.06/Emutos is on a single EPROM in an IDE adapter board, so no need to split, but not knowing what DualTOS you have means it's difficult for me to comment on yours. Which one is your BTW?

There are ROM splitting tools available but for the STE you would just need it divided in two. A lot of the ROMs are full size and will run on emulators like Hatari or Aranym.

You'd need something like a TL866-II to write EPROM's, and yes you'd use those .img files. The extension isn't important. Or you could go for a TOS switcher, if you ask Exxos nicely he might program TOS2.06/EmuTOS in a chip for you... https://www.exxosforum.co.uk/atari/store2/#0139

I think I download the wrong thing previously.
I wrongly assumed the files were floppy images for writing with winimage.
I now have download EMUTOS 256 .prg
again many files ..but these are language specific.
again formatted a 720k disk on my old pc ...and dumped the UK version .prg on it.
Booted the Atari using 2.06 and ran the .prg from floppy...
everyone has to start somewhere..but looks promising.
In an Ideal world running EmuTOS from ROM would be the end goal....but for now my old brain needs some coffee..

I'm not short of programmers Steve (I used to be TV engineer) and I snapped up a TL866 when it first came out...what I am short of is chips and PLCC converter bases..
do you happen to know what chips I would need to order for the TOS switcher, I could open the Atari again to take a look but asking is quicker ...and would those
rom .imgs I grabbed require splitting Hi Lo or are they already done ?

@Vipersan I think this is the EPROM you would need: https://www.exxosforum.co.uk/atari/store2/#0251
In terms of PLCC adapters... mine came with my TL866-II when I bought it, so perhaps you can find them as individual adapters on ebay or aliexpress.

And for splitting, you can use ROMSPLIT by Ppera or there are other tools available, I think Badwolf wrote some Python scripts to do it too. https://github.com/dh219/Hi-Lo-Byte-Split and here is a video of Badwolf using it:

Thanks Steve ..It may well be less expensive and less waiting time if Exxos could progam me one.
..as I might have to buy chips that turn out to be fake..plus single PLCC converter bases are not cheap.
Over to you if you read this @ EXXOS can you program me one up mate ? 2.06 and EMUTOS ?
cheers

A word of warning about PLCC adapters, they are not always wired correctly.

This is mine:

And you can see that I've had to add 2 extra wires in order for the adapter to work correctly.

If you have an Atari STe the best EPROM to use is 2x 27C1000 EPROM as it is pin-compatible with the MASK ROMs (e.g. no need to solder the jumpers which allow you to select the various different ROM types)

And what about a pcb for switching between rom sets Alex ..
can these be purchased or is it a DIY project ?

Switching between EmuTOS and TOS is not something I have done.

I use plain TOS2.06 (2x 27C1000 EPROMs) with the ICD HDD driver and 1GB GemDOS partitions on my ACSI2STM. I read/write the SD card in Windows using the PC tool Drimus.

https://atari.8bitchip.info/drimus.php

I always wanted to switch to EmuTOS as using GemDOS is a bit of a pain.

But I've recently got a SideCartridge Multidevice and I use that to mount Wireless network drives to transfer files around.
