Maybe it is why people are getting confused and thinking the current sold board is expensive and hard to build because they are confusing it with previous boards :shrug: Is basically minimal soldering involved and you can literally get the thing up and running in under a hour.
Not all the parts were fitted like the simm socket because I think they was like £12 each, so 12 x 50 = £600. The costs quickly add up and I simply ran out of funds to invest in any more parts being fitted. I think at the time the oscillators were out of stock and I had to get them custom-made. I don't think I had them at the time the C1 went into production. but even so, sending multiple packages to China for various parts also and adds up in price.
Also, the more parts fitted the more the end price would end up being. There's also the overall issue of weight in the physical size of the thing for shipping problems. Regular forum members back then would know the extremes I went to to keep the postage and size and weight all down to something sensible. The whole thing got delayed multiple times and I just wanted to get it completed in the end because it was all driving me nuts.
Realistically if they was fully assembled it could have added another £100 onto the price easily. Was then people would want to buy them populated and tested which would result in buying a £100 scrap ST.. plus time unsoldering parts and soldering them in.. The overall a complete board would end up something around £500.. and as some people were complaining about the cost of the board as it is now.. :roll: Overall I just opted to build them to a reasonable "price point". I guess a lot of people missed a lot of those topics because everything was rapidly progressing at the time.
