Dragonflight

Post by russellnash »

To fill the void left by Amberstar I decided to try its predecessor, Dragonflight

What is it about? All the dragons have disappeared and all the magic, too. It is up to you to find the magic scrolls and hopefully eventually find out what happened to the dragons.
It is a big game. I managed to complete it without entering three of the main dungeons, which are also very big.
There is an Atari Games Adapted version available, but I couldn't get it to work on my Ultrasatan setup. The Atari legends Floppy version was a good opportunity to use my floppy emulator which gets very little use. It is not too bad because there is minimum disk swapping.
There were some technical problems. After a while the Disk B image seems to get corrupted and dungeons don't load properly or it crashes when you enter. The game save file was always intact, so I recopied the image and then copied the save file, then it was fine. There is only one save, so backing up regularly is a good idea.
There is no auto mapping and it is essential to get the maps which you can find on the Thalion source and oldgames websites.
On the whole it is a great game, but does suffer from being tedious at times because of how long the game is. Amberstar is more accessible and it is probably better for most people to play that first. The stories are not related.

Play Ambermoon (.NET) with the Atari music enabled?

There is an official Thalion Dragonflight v1.1 HD installer (circa 2013) by the late Udo Fischer. It was improved by Ppera to be more compatible.

Plus I believe there was a HD installer by dBug?

This might be one of the bugs that was fixed in the v1.1 release but more likely a side effect of the copy protection.

I am sure I will get to playing Ambermoon eventually, it is setup on my Linux PC. Some time ago I tried it with Pimiga on a Raspberry Pi, but it kept crashing and was therefore unplayable. It is funny how my motivation disappears if its not on the Atari. I didn't know about the ST music option. Dragonflight plays music tracks the whole time. Eventually I had to turn them off because it gets annoying but there are some great tracks.

Almost all the bugs discovered during development of Ambermoon.net have been back-ported to the Amiga version.
