Re: Basilisk II Atari
By the way, if I do a restart on my TT I get a sad mac: 0000000F:00000000A
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

It has now learned to clean up after itself so you'll come back to where you where on the Atari desktop after shutting down MacOS.

Quit to desktop works nicely for me under under MiNT (F030/IDE/DFB1r5/STRAM) :)agranlund wrote: 18 Mar 2022 20:37 It has now learned to clean up after itself so you'll come back to where you where on the Atari desktop after shutting down MacOS.

Re: Basilisk II Atari
OK, just tested the latest build.
Interesting performance changes. Disk access slightly slower (7.12 vs. 7.97) and math slightly slower too (8.60 vs. 8.76). CPU and Graf both the same as previously.

Re: Basilisk II Atari
I have uploaded a new version that is just barely capable of outputting sound.
It also has the beginning of a configuration window on startup.
http://www.happydaze.se/wp-content/uplo ... 20324b.zip
There are sound drivers for:
- Silent dummy device
- Atari DMA
- Atari YM
- Covox Speech Thing
- MV16 cartridge
- Replay 8/8S/16 cartridges
Playback parameters can be changed in the MacOS Sound control panel (or directly in basilisk.inf)
I've only tested YM, Covox and MV16 on a real computer.
DMA was tested in Hatari so it'll be interesting to hear if that works on the real thing.
I don't have any of those Replay cartridges so they may or may not work correctly. Most of the code was lifted directly from ScummST so they came without additional effort.
Sound enabled, regardless of driver, is still causing some programs to lock up or behave badly.
I tested a handful of games, Lemmings, Marathon, Civ, Wolfenstein, Warcraft 1&2, and some more do work fine. Sierra games sound terrible :/
A bunch of old b&w only games do not output sound at all, not sure they are on the PC version of BasiliskII either.
Oh, and if you don't like it, you can disable that new startup GUI by putting "nogui true" in basilisk.inf.

Thanks, Anders. I really want this project to work well so will give this a go as soon as I can and report back. Knee deep in board bring up at the moment, I’m afraid!agranlund wrote: 24 Mar 2022 22:49 I have uploaded a new version that is just barely capable of outputting sound.

Re: Basilisk II Atari
I should be able to test this new build this evening.
I should note that as the sound system is based upon your ScummST code the sound may not work properly on my TT given that the music never worked in the end.

I'm following your project with great interest, love those youtube videos :)Badwolf wrote: 25 Mar 2022 09:03 Thanks, Anders. I really want this project to work well so will give this a go as soon as I can and report back. Knee deep in board bring up at the moment, I’m afraid!
Thanks Stephen, I was hoping you'd give it a go on your machine!stephen_usher wrote: 25 Mar 2022 09:19 I should note that as the sound system is based upon your ScummST code the sound may not work properly on my TT given that the music never worked in the end.
For now, you'll get a drop in performance with sound enabled even if nothing is actually being playing.
I don't know how much with DMA, but with software playback enabled my Speedometer CPU score goes from 11.8 to 10.6.
There are currently some general issues in signalling when sounds are active or not (and I think this is why some apps are misbehaving/locking up, waiting forever for MacOS to signal that all sounds are finished).
Until that is sorted out I'm running the output interrupt all the time even if the sound buffer is just a bunch of zeros.
DMA should be less affected by this, but it's still having to copy + sign-convert MacOS's mixer output into an ST-RAM buffer, and sometimes unnecessarily.
Sound is going to be choppy during disk access. I also don't know how slower machines than mine react to sound playback.
I think I should expose the size of the output buffer as an option in case you'd need to increase it to prevent underruns.
Oh, and the MacOS volume settings are not being respected at the moment.
It's a work in progress :)
Edit:
I made a tiny 10MB disk available. It has Lemmings on it which is quite good for testing sound and music.

Re: Basilisk II Atari
Sound on my MegaST with PAK030 works but is it over the PSG horrible. Onto my Atari TT the Sound is good so I guess the DMA Sound is working.

Nice! Thank you :)frank.lukas wrote: 25 Mar 2022 12:50 Sound on my MegaST with PAK030 works but is it over the PSG horrible. Onto my Atari TT the Sound is good so I guess the DMA Sound is working.
Yeah digitised audio on the PSG is horrible. Super noisy and also quite expensive on the CPU.
It's a bit of a last resort if you don't have any other way of playing digitised audio.
The CVX4 Covox clone from Serdashop is better, but the MV16 cartridge made by @DoG is by far the best sounding one (not counting DMA sound of course.. DMA sound is of course better still)
Speaking of which... how much would one have to bribe you for a new version with the audio jack pointing to the back of the machine instead of out left :)
