Hi from yet another Chris...

Post by displaced »

... I suppose it was a popular name in the 80s!

I've made a few posts here already (and got some great bits of advice), but only just realised there's a 'say hi!' forum.

So, 'hello!'. I'm entering middle age, but have been working on restoring my old computers and some online finds for a few years now. Was an Acorn and Atari kid, starting with the Electron and ending with the Falcon, with an STFM in the middle.

Have thoroughly enjoyed bringing my old computers and consoles back to life - it's amazing there's so many people out there making great stuff for these machines. I like 'tricking-out' the machines to as good as they could've been back in the day. So IDE-to-SD boards, Ultrasatans, all that kind of thing are up my street. Not personally a fan of accelerating old machines up the wazoo - slowness is part of the charm!

Started off with the ST, Falcon, Lynx, Jaguar and Electron. But things really went downhill (:D) when I rescued a Commodore CDTV my brother-in-law had stashed in the loft and forgotten about. Then came an XEGS, a Portfolio, a VIC-20 and an Acorn Archimedes A3020 (lovely machine). Most recently I picked up a Mega STE which is gradually finding its way back to happiness.

I'm a developer by trade (C#, Python, a bit of Swift) who's currently moving into DevOps. But I've always kinda enjoyed the hardware side a little bit more (would make many different choices if I had my time over!). Learning as I go has been great fun (old dog, new tricks etc) and I wouldn't have been able to do it without forums like this one! Although I fall squarely into "know enough to be dangerous" territory, I do try to know when I'm at the end of my knowledge and go find help!

Anyway - nice to be here, and thanks again for all the help so far!
A bunch of Ataris and others:
Atari XEGS with RGB mod - STFM - Portfolio - Lynx Mk1 with McWill display - Mega STE - Falcon030 - Jaguar
Commodore VIC-20 CR with ClearVideo - CDTV (Wicher 8MB+IDE)
Acorn Electron - Archimedes A3020
