Hi,

Can anyone recommend a nice and affordable programmer that can flash 16 bit EPROMs?

I wanted to try EmuTOS on my H4 and found out, that my trusty Batronix BX32P could not program the 27C4096...

Ideally there should be Linux software for it, but I have a Windows Laptop that I keep for "special" uses ;)

XGecu TL866II Plus is widely used and popular. Only has windows program for it. It can program 27C4096 but plcc footprint needs an adapter to dip and most of them seems to be needed some modification to work.

FYI the Windows program works fine with VirtualBox Windows, for those who are running Linux or MacOS. I haven't tried anything like Wine, but I would anticipate less success there.

You are correct about the PLCC adapter. The ones included with most of the TL866II kits are wired for microcontrollers, not ROMs. It's a fairly easy modification to make it work with ROMs, but if you want to avoid that, here's a reasonably priced adapter that will handle both: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/678218521.html

I'd go for the TL866II+ too, it's also useful for testing chips like the74LSseries as well as programming them.

The PLCC adaptor only needs minor mods, so no major problems there.
