PLEASE stop saying "just use Cloudflare". We know about Cloudflare and have used it in the past. We have another system that works the same way, but unfortunately it went down.
UPDATE: The culprit is Shanghai263 again, and from gnif: "The service that flags networks including theirs for blocking was attached and crashed early this morning. The infrastructure has a fail-safe configuration so that if this occurs it doesn't block the entire site."
Can all registered uses please login, even just for a few minutes..

Re: EEVblog forum keeps going down.
What is the EEV forum? Hmmm fascinating. 30 years in the EE industry and I've never seen it before.

Yeah I googled it. Not a forum I've come across. But then I'm more an "inside the chip" than "outside the chip" kinda guy.

I wonder why they don't just geo-block China? Almost all Chinese *people* (not bots) have VPN's anyway, so I doubt it'd effect real users, but might stop the bots.
Re: EEVblog forum keeps going down.
Its not just China though. The traffic keeps moving all over the place. Its why I ended up blocking 25% of the Internet.Steve wrote: Thu Sep 10, 2026 10:34 am I wonder why they don't just geo-block China? I'm just referring to EEVlog though, he says that his bot attacks mainly come from China.

"today" yes, "tomorrow" no. They shift around. They can't have figured that part out yet.Steve wrote: Thu Sep 10, 2026 12:54 pm I'm just referring to EEVlog though, he says that his bot attacks mainly come from China.
AF blocked China outright when this all started. Works for a couple weeks, and then traffic comes from elsewhere.. rinse and repeat... It's a playing a game you can't win. They seem to be at the point I was at 2 years ago. China isn't specifically the problem, 25% of the internet is. What is left is basically "noise" in comparison but still is a substantial hit of traffic.
My server gets hit from UK networks but nowhere near as bad as other countries. So they get handled by dropping and rate-limiting rules rather than outright blocking. If that starts failing to deal with the traffic then blocking starts to happen as a last resort.. This is all done automatically in real time.. Its basically a score based system I use now.. It weighs up the risks between dropping connections and outright banning whole networks.
Look at the hassle with Facebook's AI crawler I have had multiple times. I was dropping the connections to them and even nginx couldn't keep up just doing that. That's how bad the traffic is.. And that is only Facebook.. Never mind when a significant chunk of the Internet is knocking at your door..
