My girlfriend and I thinks devices are listening to us, because it has happened multiple times, where we will mention something, then some advert relating to it will pop up somewhere on some feed..

I started mentioning I wanted to buy a pink bucket in the lounge, a blue bucket in the bedroom... Thinking I could track down what was doing it, but I never got any adverts for buckets.... Probably will do now though!
Reminds me a bit of the early days of demoparty streams on Twitch - at least now, if people are not subscribed to the channels they get gaming related adverts appearing (usually Playstation or Xbox) but in the early days, adverts for all kinds of things were seem on the stream, including Pampers nappies ....

I mostly talked about this kinda stuff in the moderator forum. Where I put together a legal defense should ofcom come after us. The UK as it stood, only seems to require adiquate protection. This is more complicated worldwide..

I saw a video pop up in my feed about age verification and how it's effecting adult sites. But bare with me on this...

The idea is simple to again protect minor's. Though the jist seems to be a 90%+ drop in traffic as people dont want to put their credit card or other personal information into website which can be classed as a bit iffy at the best of times. The video goes on to basically say the sites can't operate under such restrictions and will likely soon go offline. I won't go into more details, but I can forsee a lot of "unintended consequences" of not good nature which will be on the increase. But not topics we should talk about on this forum.

While we can all argue pros and cons, what I see is again a worrying trend of control. Where again, industry takes the fallout of "simple" requlations. The governments must think, verification by credit card, no problem, you can still get access. But no, it's not that simple.

If you go back to the simple topic of age verification for forums like ours how many people would enter their credit card info to gain access? I suspect regular users many frown upon it but do it. But the vast traffic to the forum are guests. Someone who never heard of this forum will be reluctant to enter their info into a site just to access a bit of content. On that assumption, it would also have a significant fallout to form traffic.

Now please don't misunderstand.. It many not come to that for small forums, at least its not a problem as such currently. But its the matter of control governments have which I constantly see issues with.

For me, like 20-30 years ago. Nothing was really hidden away. There was sites like steakandcheese which was the hub for "all things". Mostly I downloaded funny stuff memes, videos, joke programs etc. Was some fun stuff on there. But it also had a much much darker side. You could get literally any content you wanted on there. Folders you only visited once. Distubing yes. But I find what governments are doing much more worrying and distributing over any content I ever saw online.

Yeah it's one thing to protect children or whatever, but we are just becoming a Nancy State now with small guys being the usual collateral damage again. It gives governments the freedom to shut down any platform, which is why free speech can get suppressed..

Imagine someone being offended by a blown capacitor and then me getting a nasty letter from ofcom.. At first they *should* request the content to be removed.. But if they bother to really check the offences or just give everyone a huge fine and have a nice day...

It's like when I drove on a road in derby and got fined as it was bus only lane.. my bad... To a point.. but the signs are not good enough.. loads of people complaining about it. But by law, they went above and beyond with signs.. so even when they get backlash by the public for better signs... They ignore it... To simple of a money making scheme.. why change it ? That's unfortunately where we are these days. Laws are broken and it's the little guys who have to foot the bill all the time. How can we fight it ? We can't.

It all smells like my issues with eBay and PayPal.. someone could make something up, give a random URL as proof, will it be checked ? I doubt it. Takes to much time..so you end up taking the fallout of companies own incompetence.. There should be more useful laws about that IMO!

Also the governments and media cause the most distress these days.Hate and fear generate clicks. Little is fact checked anymore and it's all biased reporting. Like the Brexit word slinging which often happens like with the GPSR EPR and all that crap which has nothing to do with Brexit.. Nothing will be done about that of course.. I find media reporting VERY disturbing, its why i avoid it now. They not fit for purpose anymore. Where's the enforcement to stop that kinda thing ? Where my millions in compensation for all the daily stress I get dealing with all this crap ?
Speaking of Offcom. This gave me a good laugh:

felicemaggie wrote: 18 Mar 2025 17:52 Hi everyone,

Have just seen this slightly worrying article from the Telegraph today, in relation to the UK's new Internet Security Act - which appears to be causing some difficulties for users of other forums ...

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/20 ... new-laws/

Cheers,

Rich.
If you read the article, it’s a complete beat up with a factually incorrect headline. They try to claim small websites are being shutdown en masse and cite 3 examples. 1 forum chose to shutdown one off-topic area, one shutdown citing completely unrelated reasons (server costs) and one was an overseas site which geoblocked UK visitors, just be be safe.

About the level of journalism one expects from the Torygraph really.

Sad times and likely the shape of things to come..

Capture.PNG

I was reading the UK government want to have age verification on wikipedia but they are fighting it. Want to protection children from "the war stuff" etc. Not like we get taught history at school, or have grandma constantly go on about the wars anyway.

All getting way beyond a joke now. Everything on the internet will just get regulated to death. Will end up with countries having to have their own wikis and then control the information the public see.. The whole "protecting children" things , well fine, seems a good idea, but its also the first brick removed for controlling other stuff down the line IMO.

We need a new internet, one governed by the users out of couperate reach

So future retro content will only be obtainable via the dark web in the future...
